Nubian Life aims to expand its activities to include all aspects of leisure and recreation - education and IT has played a huge part in the empowerment of elders. Research conducted by Nubian Life into the needs and aspirations of African Caribbean elders within the borough found that watching TV and looking after grandchildren were a major source of recreation. Recommendations of the research suggested programmes that encourage lifelong learning, physical and mental pursuits should be planned in conjunction with organisations that are culturally sensitive to the needs of the users. In July 2001, Nubian Life formed a partnership to establish the Life Long Learning Suite with the Virtual Engine, a local mobile training and learning provider that has a proven track record for working with disadvantaged communities. The Learning Suite encourages the elders to learn at their own pace in a relaxed atmosphere, and since it was established it has given hundreds of black elders the opportunity to explore new skills. |
